From the military to personal use, technology advancement has progressed at an incredibly fast pace over the years, including the very popular flying robot – the “DRONE” (UAV- Unmanned Aerial Vehicle)

The initial development of a flying device began in 1935, just prior to the development of the first low-cost, radio-controlled drone that was used for aerial target practice soon afterwards.

These days, it’s a common tool in various industries due to its multiple uses and advantages such as: low cost; remote pilot control; accurate collection ability and light-weight design.

From videography to aerial photography, these nifty mini flying machines are providing super new approaches to historical methods we once used in the past.

From surveillance to the recreational mini-drones, they come with different capabilities and sizes, including a vast selection of models.

Instead of throwing a whole bunch of technical information at you, we decided to break things down into a few different categories.

As a guide, we’ve put together a short description of four drone categories, including their unique features and what brought them to their heights of popularity.

See Also : Drone Registration is required in Australia: How to register your drone?

What are the 4 types of drones?

1. Multi-Rotor Drone.

The multi-rotor drone can be classified by the number of rotors. They are: tricopters – 3 rotors, quadcopters – 4 rotors, hexacopters – 6 rotors, octocopters – 8 rotors.

You’ll often notice this small flying device with propellers above its body, in your local park. The propellers create lift and enables pilot precise control.

They’re great for aerial photography and can hover and multi take-off vertically.

2. Single-Rotor Helicopter Drone.

This type has tiny multi-rotor devices with larger single-wing units. This assists the drone to hover and launch vertically. Due to the lack of multiple motors, it makes them more efficient.

These are larger and more complex than other types. The blades can also make them dangerous, so appropriate training is required prior to use.

3. Fixed-Wing Hybrid VTOL Drone.

This device is the latest technology in the marketplace. It’s a mix of fixed-wing drones with vertical take off, including a rotor-based device that will give you a longer range of flight time.

With its versatile hybrid hardware, it’s a great choice for commercial use, making it a great option for long-distance flying.

4. Fixed-Wing Drone.

This particular drone cannot take off vertically and is unable to hover. It’s similar to the more conventional planes that require a runway to launch.

However, it is more efficient due to its aerodynamics and can operate for longer flying distances, without stopping to recharge batteries.

What can your drone do for you?

Aerial Photography & Videography.

The most common use of a drone is to take advantage of what we cannot see. Video and photographs taken at heights that only the birds are privy to are resulting in the most inspiring, creative shots and compositions.

Recreation, real estate photography, live streaming events, search and rescue and pre-nuptial shoots are all just a few of what you can achieve once you get your hands on a Drone.

Prior practice is required to master this flying device, including familiarising yourself with the laws surrounding this device.

Search and Rescue

These days drones are commonly used for emergency and public safety, highway patrols, law enforcement and fire departments.

They deliver impact and danger assessments, communication with vital information, faster transportation for deliveries of medical supplies, including supply chains.

They’re at the forefront of enabling a more targeted and effective response that contributes to improving anticipatory action rapidly.

Mapping and Surveying.

Drones are also used to create 3D mapping of structures by using a procedure called, “photogrammetry”.

Photogrammetry gathers measurements and data information about a “physical object” within the environment.

This process records, measures and interprets photographic images and patterns which can then be applied for analysis to public safety, civil engineering, construction, agriculture, military exploration and more…

Agriculture Sector.

Within the agriculture sector, its popularity has gained traction, due to the efficiency it provides. Drones are ideal for farmers to accomplish easy navigation of crops and land areas.

This device makes a huge contribution to the industry because it saves time and no longer has the need for expensive resources.

In today’s world, the agriculture industry can instantly inspect a location by drone to retrieve the necessary data.

Drone Racing.

Drone racing is a very popular sport where teams compete to challenge the best pilots on different courses.

This is an emerging sport involving millions of dollars every year being poured into its industry across all walks of the globe.

So, if you’re keen to become a drone racing pilot, you’ll need the skills to stay calm, a natural thirst for speed with very fast reflexes. These particular drones are different to those used by photographers.

Action Drone.

Due to its sophisticated software, action sports can command the aerial vehicle to follow them around, without the need for controls.

In addition, news reporters are capturing the essence of spectacular events, including massive options for creative videos and compositions.

Advertising & Parcel Delivery.

These days, many restaurants and take-aways are using drone flight capabilities to deliver their menu orders and takeaway meals.

Businesses are also taking advantage of the drone to deliver their flyers and products, especially in high-traffic locations.

According to the latest data, Australia’s online shopping industry increased by 8.9% in 2022, indicating that we’ll see more and more drones buzzing about in the future.

Be Cautious.

As drones become more and more popular, they become a target for cyber attacks. By feeding false GPS coordinates, hackers can take control of a drone.

Unfortunately, hackers are also capable of intercepting data that is transmitted between its remote controller and drone.

ALWAYS take extra precaution to protect your drone and storage by adopting anti-virus software, including strong passwords.
